Information & Requirements

Toolmakers and Tool & Die Maintenance Technicians carry out work in manufacturing, and maintaining the tools required for products, components and assemblies that affect our everyday lives.

This requires a broad range of tasks including the interpretation of engineering drawings and technical instructions and the use of hand, machine and automated computer controlled machine tools and measuring equipment.

Career Paths

Toolmakers are usually employed by manufacturing companies with their own tool making departments or by specialist workshops making components to order for other companies.

You could become a Workshop Supervisor, Machine Maintenance Technician or move into Quality Control in fields. You could work in sectors such as Aerospace, Product and Parts Manufacturing, Plastics Product Manufacturing, Machine Shops, Turned Product and Screw, Nut, and Bolt Manufacturing.

Your employer may offer opportunities to progress onto a higher apprenticeship or advance to gain a degree level qualification.
